REVIEW: Weightless by Kandi Steiner

SYNOPSIS

I remember the lights. 

I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn’t be able to capture that moment. 

I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he’d made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered. 

But then everything changed. 

He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process. 

I remember the lights. 

The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue. 

They symbolized everything I endured that summer. 

And everything I would never face again.

MY OPINION

 If I had to describe what this novel is about in a few words I would say: self acceptance and finding the (your) truth.

 When I dig into Weightless I was expecting another kind of story given the synopsis/blurb, but I was rewarded with a more profound and beautifully story than I could have imagined. I'm so glad Kandi Steiner decided to write this.

 Weightless is one of those stories that will stick with you forever.

 Natalie is an insecure, good hearted young woman, whose parents' own the town. She's rich (though not the spoiled type) and most of her friends seem to be around her for that reason. She's also a big girl, she has more weight than what she would feel comfortable with, but it isn't until her high school boyfriend dumps her and starts dating a petite brunette that she realizes it.

'If you give your all to someone else, realize you may one day have to change all you know about yourself'

When that happens something clicks inside her, and even though you could say 'Hey, why didn't she see it before? Why did she just react to a guy breaking up with her?' we all know that sometimes we skip reality in order to feel better until we can no longer run away, and that's what happened to her. Her ex's new girlfriend being mean towards her and listening to her own mother wishing she would do something for herself (yes, she sounds superficial and she may be a little bit but she's also a loving mother who always fought to try and give her daughter what she thought was the best) are the ultimate breaking points. Then she decides to take the gym clases that her mother suggested and there's where she meets Rhodes, a guy with a past that haunts him and who looks tougher than he really is on the inside. Hot as hell and amazing as a trainer, he makes her sweat for more than just one reason. Rhodes sees something in Natalie and he is determined to explode that potential.

'But this is about me, too. It's about getting me back. Or rather getting a new me. A me that's never existed before. A better me'

 The story between them isn't easy and it gets more complicated as it develops. They're both shattered people, for different reasons, who can't see the good in their selves, but sometimes an external look can make you rethink everything.

 Weightless is the development of both Natalie and Rhodes, their personal grown and the struggle of their relationship. It's a really moving story that will bring you to tears and you can easily relate to it even if your insecurities are not the same as theirs.

'His brows knitted together, and I wondered if he'd ever be able to kiss me without feeling like he didn't deserve to'

 At the same time, with some hints on the way, there's a second story, a plot twist let's say, growing bigger each chapter. I expected what came but didn't save me from suffering less! There's where the blurb is taken from and though it doesn't describe the majority of the book it is the last nail to the coffin. So I understand why they use it as the synopsis, but still think it could be helpful if they add something else so the reader does for sure know what is digging into. Anyway that doesn't relate to the story itself and is nothing that affects how much you would love this book!

 This is the first book that I read from the author and I am already craving for more! I'm more than happy to have found her. Her writing style is beautiful and reminded me of a mix of Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher, of course that in her own way, and if you know these writers then I have nothing more to say!

Weightless is an emotional trip that everyone needs to take! I highly recommend it!
